This lecture focuses on the work of the Austrian artist Birgit Jürgenssen (1949–2003), an important but only recently recognised representative of the post-war feminist avant-garde, whose work in the fields of photography, sculpture, performance, and drawing radically subverted the patriarchal norms connected to the female body, behaviour, and action. A selection of works that develop the theme of the feminine (not) I – meaning the search for, the formation, deformation, transformation, masking, or annihilation of the female subjectivity – will be considered in the context of more general problems of the feminist art of this period and its protagonists on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Before the lecture, we recommend visiting the exhibition Birgit Jürgenssen and Sophie Thun: double pose, reflecting self – reflecting pose, double self.
The lecture will take place on-line.
